In business, many leaders believe that their SOP is defined as “standard operating procedure”. When CEO Hubert Joly began Best Buy’s turnaround in 2012 one of his key executives challenged the team to revise their definition to “service over policy”. The decision to focus on the best interests of customers over company policy freed employees up to make decisions that encouraged brand loyalty and improved company culture.

To exhibit “extreme ownership” a leader must accept total responsibility, own problems that inhibit performance, and develop solutions to those problems. Only in this way will the team members see that the role they play and the efforts they contribute can improve the team’s work and bring about the highest performance.
