Persistence matters more than talent. The student with straight A’s is irrelevant if the student sitting next to him with B’s has more passion. – Andrew Ross Sorkin

I was talking shop with a friend this morning when he mentioned he’d begun taking anxiety meds over the fear of “what if’s” sinking his company. While certainly being supportive in his feelings I posed the idea that perhaps its the daily “what if’s” that make us as entrepreneurs successful. While forward thinking can lead to frazzled nerves it also makes for smart planning and situational awareness. Two very important factors when it comes to long term financial success. 5 design principles for structuring compensation plans – Verne Harnish

  1. Be Different – If you’re paying the same as your competition you’re fishing in the same pond.
  2. Fairness, not sameness – Not all employees perform equally. Don’t pay them equally.
  3. Easy on the carrots – Too many perks make people feel entitled.
  4. Gamify gains – Look for company-wide participation to achieve company-wide gains.
  5. Sharing is caring – 401k, stocks, and other programs that vest over time create longevity and loyalty.

I’m a big believer in living your life by a set of uncompromisable core values. Today I stumbled across those of our real estate agent.

  • Work hard
  • Be available and responsive, always
  • Be innovative and creative
  • Negotiate expertly
  • Be nice and have fun.

Do all these things and more, the accolades will follow. Though the true reward is in the work and the winning results.
