Very few businesses spend their entire existence selling to the same market. In fact most CEO’s believe their model will change significantly over the next 3 years. Our company is no different. “Starting with why” can be confusing for leaders. What is supposed to be a “purpose” question, ends up being a laundry list of “brand promises” i.e. why do people buy from us, because we deliver fast, quality service, etc. The much better question is a “what” question i.e. what difference are you trying to make? What problem are you trying to solve in the world? What do you want to do with your life? What is your purpose? You’ll notice whenever someone describes their purpose it’s with a lot of “what” statements as well. – Verne Harnish
